MARCH
Music Box: The Improvised Comedy Musical

Saturday 2nd March – 6.00pm: Music Box: The Improvised Comedy Musical

Music Box improvise a different one act comedy musical every show. Songs and lyrics are plucked from thin air. Stories and characters emerge from nothing. All you would want from a comedy show, combined with all you would want from a musical, made up on the spot from audience suggestions. Join Music Box on an epic musical adventure where nothing is impossible.

Previous shows have included The Second Coming of Martin Smith (from Croydon, set against the background of the 2012 riots), Death on Stornoway (a horror musical about an odd B&B) and Journey to the Large Hadron Collider (which happened to be out the back of a Wetherspoon's).

How did you discover improvisation?

We all come from very different backgrounds. Many of us first saw improvisation in Whose Line Is It Anyway, and now do something completely different to that. We've learnt from loads of great teachers from around the world.

What’s the most memorable improvisation you have seen or been part of in the last year?

Difficult, there's loads and we all have different ones... Return to Piano Planet, which we did at the Shaw Theatre in August, definitely stands out. It had an accordion playing hero, a planet-destroying laser beam, and a camp Darth Vader. Great fun.

What are your top three impro tips?

Listen, listen and listen.

Recommend a book on improvisation ...

Well we need to mention Impro for Storytellers. We also like Improvise: Scene from the Inside Out by Mick Napier

Write you own question on improvisation and give an answer ...
“Why is our logo a gramophone, and not a Music Box?”

We're not sure to be honest, it's sort of lost to history. But we like the gramophone.

Anything else you'd like to add?

"Music is the brandy of the damned." -- George Bernard Shaw
